The Old Man of Barrow, a mighty, secretive magician, attempts to guide his city by controlling individual lives. He's constantly frustrated, first by his insane son and later by events that slip from his grasp. The stories' individuals constantly wrest the future from his control, never recognizing it. Gradually leaving his puppeteering behind, the Old Man watches as Barrowmen march into their own futures. From his defeat of his crazed son, to his rescue of his wandering second son, to a self-elevated slum girl, to a too-honest gate guard, to a guileless Prince who rescues his city from a calendar crisis, to a struggling young inventor, to an adventuring pair who discover more than they meant to: The city struggles onward.
