Synopsis
I did not write these reflections on Samson to retell a familiar Bible story. I wrote them because I have spent my life walking with leaders—students, pastors, chaplains, and servants of God—who are gifted, sincere, called, and yet quietly struggling. I wrote them because I have learned, sometimes painfully, that leadership formation does not begin with platforms, skills, or success. It begins in the hidden places of the heart, where obedience is tested, pride is exposed, and surrender is learned.
Samson’s life refuses to let us hide behind our gifts.
Too often, leaders are taught how to preach, organize, innovate, and inspire, but not how to examine their desires, govern their impulses, or sit honestly with their failures. Samson stands in Scripture as a cautionary companion to every leader who has ever confused anointing with maturity, strength with surrender, or effectiveness with intimacy with God. His story gives language to a truth many leaders feel but rarely confess: you can be powerfully used by God and still be inwardly unformed.
I wrote these pieces because biblical characters are not marble statues; they are mirrors.
