Here is how it may happen. After birth, hippocampal neurogenesis undergoes a brief peak, amplified by the infant's informational environment. Normally, most of these new neurons undergo apoptosis and are cleared away.
But a subset of these neurons may escape this process: excessive proliferation at the hippocampal cellular level causes them to accumulate beyond the hippocampus's capacity, overflowing the hippocampus proper and reaching the white matter.
Within the white matter migratory stream, these overflow neurons occupy the migration channels normally used by other neurons.
Displaced neurons are forced onto a non-canonical route into the cortex, where they form independent connections unrelated to the region's existing function, gradually giving rise to a relatively independent structure never before identified, which may be part of why it has escaped detection by neuroscience for so long.
Earlier "human-specific brain region" hypotheses stopped at asserting that such a structure exists, without explaining where it comes from. The Mind Network hypothesis goes further, offering a complete, testable pathway: the joint product of environmental stimulation, developmental timing, and cellular migration.
