Bevis and his friend Mark have the run of a Wiltshire farm and a great glittering pond, and out of them they build an entire world: an inland sea to be sailed and charted, jungles and savages, a gun to be forged, and a hidden island to be discovered and defended through one endless summer of make-believe that is somehow more real than the grown-up world around it.
First published in 1882 and drawn from Richard Jefferies's own boyhood by the water at Coate, Bevis: The Story of a Boy is the great English novel of the imagination of childhood - luminous with real fields, real weather, and real wonder, and loved ever since by readers and writers who came after.
