Synopsis
Alaska, 1940. Vivian Marsh restores broken furniture; she reads made things the way other people read faces, and she has loved Josephine Ryder for six years without once managing to say so. When the two women take Winterhail - a great grey house nine days' hire, remote past the last town with a lamp - Vivian carries her grandmother's ring stitched into her coat and a proposal she means, at last, to make on Christmas morning.
But Winterhail is not empty, and it is not a house. It is something older and lonelier and infinitely patient, and it has been waiting a very long time for two people exactly like them. It keeps what it loves. It renders the unspoken into rooms that should not exist. And it has learned that the deepest hunger in any human heart is not for what we say - but for what we hold back.
When Josephine vanishes into the house's cold and folding depths, Vivian must go down after her, through corridors built from grief and doors that open onto other people's futures, to the terrible truth at the heart of the keeping: that the love you never speak is the love that damns you, and the only way out is to say the whole of it - out loud, in the dark, to the one you love - before the house takes it from you forever.

About the Author
Ian Ashcroft writes gothic and cosmic horror with a literary heart. Not the kind that relies on shocks and gore, but the kind that works slowly - stories where the dread comes from what people fail to say to one another, and from the sense that something vast and patient is waiting just past the edge of understanding. He is drawn to the quiet terrors: the things left unsaid, the doors we keep shut to feel safe, the truths we save for a better morning, and the strange places love can be kept when it isn't spoken aloud.
