Ronnie has plenty to say. He just needs the people around him to understand how he says it.
Diagnosed with hearing loss at just two years old and living with Usher syndrome, Ronnie experiences the world a little differently. Sometimes conversations move too quickly. Sometimes he misses what others are saying. And sometimes being surrounded by people does not mean feeling included.
But Ronnie's world begins to change when the people who love him begin changing, too.
His mom starts learning American Sign Language. Friends discover how to communicate with him. Teachers learn simple ways to make their classroom more accessible. Little by little, Ronnie finds more ways to connect, participate, and simply be part of what is happening around him. The manuscript centers this growing access through ASL, family, friendship, and a community learning to communicate with Ronnie.
Then Ronnie gets something pretty amazing: a hearing aid for one ear and a cochlear implant for the other.
His magic ears introduce him to sounds he has never experienced in quite the same way before. Birds. Barking dogs. Familiar voices. Yet Ronnie's story is about much more than hearing. His magic also lives in the hands that sign to him, the people willing to learn, and the connections that grow when communication becomes accessible.
King Ron's Magic Ears is a heartfelt children's story celebrating Deaf and hard of hearing children, American Sign Language, hearing aids, cochlear implants, family, friendship, accessibility, and belonging.
Perfect for families, classrooms, libraries, educators, audiologists, and anyone helping children understand that there is more than one way to communicate and more than one way to experience the world.
Because Ronnie's ears may be magical...
but being understood might be the greatest magic of all.

Ronnie "King Ron" McKenzie is a Black DeafBlind author, father, content creator, and advocate born in Chicago, Illinois. He was identified as Deaf at two years old and began learning American Sign Language and receiving speech therapy. Growing up as the only Deaf child among twelve hearing siblings taught him firsthand how painful communication barriers can be and why every child deserves access to language.Ronnie lives with Usher syndrome type 2, a condition that affects both hearing and vision. He uses a cochlear implant and a hearing aid, but he refuses to let disability determine the size of his dreams. His lived experiences inspire his mission to make sure Deaf, DeafBlind, autistic, and nonverbal children are never left out, underestimated, or made to feel invisible.Through storytelling, humor, education, and advocacy, Ronnie teaches families and communities about ASL, accessibility, inclusion, and the importance of meeting children where they are. He believes ASL should be taught in schools from preschool through high school because communication is not a privilege. It is a basic human need. His message is: hands can speak, every voice matters, and no child should have to grow up feeling isolated because others did not learn how to communicate with them.As King Ron, he has built a social media community of millions by sharing his journey as a DeafBlind father of two daughters and using his platform to challenge stereotypes about disability. His children's book, King Ron's Magic Ears, celebrates Deaf identity, family support, cochlear implants, hearing aids, sign language, confidence, and the power of being understood.Inspired by his own childhood, Ronnie wrote the story to show young readers that hearing technology can be meaningful, but real connection begins when families learn sign language, listen, and make room for every way a child communicates with love.Ronnie is the founder of King Ron LLC and creates educational content and inclusive resources for children, parents, teachers, and caregivers.
