Drifting west after the blood-soaked events of Texas Revenge, former U.S. Marshal Eldridge Sample is looking for a quiet trail. Instead, he finds a column of black smoke rising from the Pecos River valley.
The Lazy J ranch has been liquidated-the family slaughtered, the dogs clubbed, and the herd driven west by "Big Red" Kilgore, a ruthless rustler with a government contract in his pocket. Wearing a blood-stained Texas Ranger star that doesn't belong to him, Sample rides into the jagged badlands of the New Mexico Territory to deliver a reckoning.
