More than 450 hilarious one-liners about virtue and religion.
Since you have elected to peruse a book of such provocative title, you probably have at least some understanding of what is meant by a “curmudgeon”—in fact, you probably are one. Herein, we will take a righteously raucous look at virtue, morality, honesty, and wisdom, plus, for the heavenly-minded, faith, hope, love, God, and the life everlasting.
Despite their rapscallion reputations, I would argue that more often than not the ribald raconteurs cited here employ their quips and repartee in service of the common good, believing that wordplay is preferable to gunplay in addressing all manner of disagreements whether social, political, moral, or religious.
To wit, George Orwell’s helpful observation that, “On the whole, human beings want to be good, but not too good and not quite all the time,” an echo of St. Augustine’s classic prayer “Lord, make me chaste and continent, but not just yet.” Woody Allen professed that “I don’t believe in an afterlife, although I am bringing a change of underwear,” and lyricist and librettist, Edgar “Yip” Harburg, confessed that “No matter how much I probe and prod, I cannot quite believe in God. But, O! I hope to God that He unswervingly believes in me.” And finally, Mark Twain avowed, “It ain’t those parts of the Bible that I can’t understand that bother me, it’s the parts that I do understand,” while Mr. Chesterton observed that, “The Christian ideal has not been tried and found wanting; it has been found difficult and left untried.”
Your host is ne’er-do-well musician, entertainment industry shill, unlicensed pedagogue, and author Tom Willett, whose mission it is to save you the trouble of having to read the hundreds of books from which he has hand-picked these most trenchant and sagacious aphorisms in the hope that it will speed you along your way to la dolce vita. The breadth of your erudition will amaze your friends and annoy your adversaries.
