In 1978, I began to develop Formalized Mentoring Programs to overcome the shortcomings of "do-your-own-thing" mentoring. I've helped over 150 organizations in business and education to collaboratively plan Programs that ensure intended benefits are produced for proteges, their mentors and the sponsoroing organization. This does not result from "Announcements" that simply encourage mentoring, or from partially-planned "Initiatives." After discovering this, I developed Mentoring for Results Partner Training and 20 customized mentoring materials to train over 20,000 mentor-protege partners to develop good relationships that achieve desired outcomes.
This latest book describes easy-to-understand conceptual models of Mentoring (e.g., my Situational Mentoring Model) plus Skill Coaching and Knowledge Solutions models. In Section 1, you'll learn the collaborative program planning process I facilitate to decide which conceptual model(s) a particular group of mentoring partners will utilize within a formalized Program. In Section 2, you'll learn how Partner Training produced benefits that satisfy the business case for starting the Program.

William A. Gray, Ph.D.
President of Mentoring Solutions(R)
After earning a B.A. and M.Ed. from the University of Virginia, and a Ph.D. from the University of Texas, I immigrated to Canada in 1970 at the suggestion of my major professor and mentor, who was from British Columbia. For the next 15 years I taught at the University of British Columbia, where I first began developing formalized mentoring programs.
Seeing the benefits that carefully planned mentoring produced for proteges, mentors and the sponsoring organization, I left academia in 1986 to devote myself full-time to developing mentoring programs [along with my wife and business partner, Marilynne Miles Gray]. Together, we organized and sponsored the First International Conference on Mentoring (held in Vancouver, July 1986), and for the next six years published the only journal on mentoring - called Mentoring International.
I have trained over 20,000 mentor-protege partners to work together, using Gray's Mentor-Protege Relationship Model(TM) and materials we especially developed, such as the Mentoring Compatibility Indicator(TM), Mentoring Style Indicator(TM), Mentoring Action Plan(TM), Mentoring Agreement(TM), and Protege Needs Inventory(TM). Over 150 organizations have asked me to help them custom develop different kinds of mentoring programs for a wide variety of proteges and purposes; these organizations include companies, government agencies, colleges and universities, and school systems.
