Erik, Earl of Clan Lachlann, has earned his people a home in Dal Riata, but the gods continue to laugh at his dreams for quiet and peace. He sends Christian souls to the afterlife in the cold, dark realm of Nilfheim, hopeful that the goddess Hel will release the soul of his wife and let her enter Valhalla.

The king will not allow them to leave until this new threat is dead, and the king must soon leave for the eastern border where the Picts gather again. Erik must kill a man that was once a brother to him, and soon, before Bishop Peader’s schemes destroy Erik’s people.
