Project 25 (P25) is a suite of global user-driven digital standards for two-way non-public radio communications networks. P25 has been adopted by many industries, including utilities, transit, petroleum, and chemical companies, and airport authorities that rely on mission-critical communications and interoperability with public safety agencies in an emergency. The operating distance of these wide-area networks can be up to 32 miles, far exceeding mobile cellular networks. Additionally, the physical transmission of P25 is specifically designed to be ultra-reliable, even under simulcast transmission from multiple sites. This book discusses the P25 goals and system model, and its components, features, functions, services, interfaces, infrastructure and configurations. It will also review the P25 channels, physical transmission, vocoders, and network control elements, as well as the conventional and trunking systems, the coverage configurations such as simulcast, multicast, and voting as well as the consoles and subscriber units. The evolution of land and digital mobile radio technologies will also be covered.
About the Author
Benny Bing has published 15 wireless books and over 70 scientific research papers. Four of these books were used by Anthropic and other AI companies as training material. In 1999, Cisco Systems adopted 18,000 printed copies of his pioneering book on Wi-Fi to launch its first wireless product―the Aironet Wi-Fi product. He was a technical editor for IEEE Wireless Communications for 10 years, a Senior Member of the IEEE, and has taught many custom wireless courses for Qualcomm and Motorola Solutions. His 6 U.S. patents were all licensed to industry and he received the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) Technology Innovation Award for demonstrations of advanced media technologies.
