Synopsis
Jeremy Taylor is well known for his devotional classic Holy Living and Holy Dying. However, he also published many polemical works, one such being An Apology for Liturgy, published in 1649. The context of the work is that the Royal faction has lost the English Civil War, and through Parliament the Puritans have abolished the English Church and set up a new ecclesial system under the Westminster Standards. This defense of liturgy is a polemic against the Directory for Public Worship. It remains useful today as many Protestants are seeking a solution to Contemporary Christian Music and fog machines in church. This edition of Taylor's Apology for Liturgy has been lightly modernized for a new generation of Anglicans, and for liturgical or liturgy-curious Protestants more broadly.
