Synopsis
In near-future Portland, software engineer Daniel Chen pays $19,999 for an SL-2 neural implant for his aging golden retriever, Baxter. Within 72 hours, Baxter wakes up with human-level intelligence, a vocabulary of 18,000 words, and ten years of observations he can finally express.
The golden days that follow are everything Daniel hoped for — and nothing he expected. Baxter declares squirrels an "organized crime syndicate," develops a near-religious devotion to pizza, and maintains an olfactory file on every neighbor that reveals a street Daniel has lived on for twelve years but never truly seen.
But Baxter has been watching longer than Daniel knows. And the question he eventually asks — about whether Daniel will leave him the way he left his ex-wife — forces both of them to confront a truth about presence, absence, and the distance between being somewhere and being there.
