Synopsis
Three days before the Cherokee Outlet Land Run, a U.S. Army paymaster is ambushed on a remote Oklahoma road. Two Buffalo Soldiers die fighting. Twenty-eight thousand dollars vanishes. And a Kansas homesteader found camped nearby is sitting in the Kingfisher jail — the most convenient suspect in a territory about to be swallowed by a hundred thousand people.
Reverend Elias Cane rides in on his circuit and finds a crime that was planned too carefully to be what it looks like. The paymaster's clerk is missing and no one has officially noticed. A cattleman's lawyer has been visiting the land office four times a month. And two soldiers — Sergeant Isaiah Dent and Corporal James Okafor — fought with conspicuous valor on that road and have not been asked the right questions about what they saw.
The land run is ten days away. At noon on September 16th, a cavalry officer will fire a gun and a hundred thousand people will pour across the territory like a flood. Whoever planned this is counting on it.
