Synopsis

Thimbleberry Moon

A Story from The Moons of Turtle Island Series

Thimbleberry Moon is a gentle story about grief, love, family, and the circle of life, told through the journey of a loving bear family.

Part of The Moons of Turtle Island series, the story is inspired by Anishinaabe teachings connected to the Thirteen Moons. Moon names and teachings vary among Anishinaabe communities, but Thimbleberry Moon is often associated with the eighth moon and with honoring the thimbleberry, the sacred circle of life, and teachings from the Spirit World.

When Father Bear becomes very sick and eventually walks the Spirit Road, Mama Bear, Grandmother Bear, and the cubs learn that grief can bring many feelings-sadness, anger, fear, loneliness, and even hope. Through family, community, nature, ceremony, stories, and remembrance, the cubs discover gentle ways to carry those feelings.

Like Bear resting through the long winter before awakening again, the story reminds children that healing takes time. The turning seasons, the Thimbleberry Moon, and the stars above help the cubs understand that life continues in a circle and that the love and teachings of those who have gone before us remain with us.

Thimbleberry Moon offers children and families a comforting way to talk about death and grief while honoring love, courage, remembrance, and connection to the natural world.
