The attic air smelled of cedar shavings, oxidized brass, and the lingering, sharp scent of ozone—the peculiar olfactory signature of a room where time had been treated as a suggestion rather than a law.
Clara stood before the towering pendulum clock, her fingers dancing over the mahogany casing with the practiced, reverent touch of a surgeon. Beside her, Julian paced the narrow aisle between stacks of dusty crates, his boots thudding against the floorboards with a rhythmic, impatient cadence that grated against the stillness.
"It’s been a year, Clara," Julian said, not stopping his march. He shoved his hands deep into the pockets of his flannel jacket, his shoulders hunched. "We promised Mom we’d clear this out by the end of the break. Not inventory every loose gear for the sake of... of keeping him alive in the attic."
Clara didn’t look up. She was currently fascinated by the way the hour hand hesitated at the twelve, twitching with a microscopic, stuttering vibration. "He didn't just leave, Julian. He was a master horologist. He understood that a clock is a system of dependencies. If one part is out of sync, the whole thing loses its truth."
