Synopsis

There is a moment every person in a position of responsibility knows: you did everything right, held the line, stayed calm, and nothing changed. The system didn't care. It's 2 a.m., and you're still awake with it. A Man of Service is written for that moment.

Drawing on eighteen voices across twenty-five centuries and five continents—Marcus Aurelius and the Buddha, Jesus and the Prophet Muhammad, Laozi, Krishna, Confucius, and lesser-known figures like Rabia of Basra, Julian of Norwich, and Hannah Arendt—this book distils one shared discipline: act fully on what is yours to do, restrain the force you're capable of, and release the outcomes that were never in your control.

Written for people whose workplaces place them in charge of others' well-being, healthcare, corrections, security, social services, education, care work, and institutional leadership — it moves from a "Council" of these historical and spiritual teachers to a practical portrait of the disciplined servant-leader to field-tested guidance for high-pressure real-world situations, closing with reflections on rest, humour, and balance.

This is not abstract philosophy. Each section ends in something usable: a daily question, a four-step practice for naming and releasing what happened on shift, and a code for holding a standard without needing anyone's permission or thanks. You don't need to share the traditions' beliefs to use their discipline — only the willingness to look honestly at your own experience.
