The second in a series of collections of poetry and observations, this title explores and examines the different ways in which life can impact us, the ways that our understanding, our perspective and therefore, yes, our very soul can be challenged and changed.
From the news of the day to the most intimate relationships we share to the flight of a hummingbird, poetry can give voice to a perspective regarding any of these, as well as a reflection upon each of them. We all have shadows, in ourselves and in our lifetimes. We have days, weeks, sometimes longer, where it feels as if we are being tossed about by a universe with a dark sense of humor. We have parts of our personality we might share with only a very few people, or, with no one at all. I would be the first to admit there have been many times when, in the midst of being under a shadow, it was not an experience I enjoyed or would want to duplicate. These shadows though, are as much a part of life as the sunlight. And, can be an effective teacher or a potent reminder of the fragility of life, and the importance of living it
Sunlight, the joys and joyful times in our life do not look the same for everyone, do not always feel the same for everyone, and they are distinct in form and expression even within our own lives. The effect of a pair of hummingbirds hovering inches away from my face today would draw a different, deeper reaction that if that some thing happened when I was sixteen. Each one of my six gifted, beautiful children brings joy, and the occasional stress, in their own way to me - and for that especially, I will always be grateful.
Just as no life is the same as any other, no poetic voice can truly be said to duplicate another. And, sometimes, even a poetic voice can have different shades. While I have been flattered by people with comparisons to other poets, my heartfelt objective, is that if even one reader walks away from having read these poems or observations, even one of them, with a lighter heart and a better perspective, I've accomplished something.
