Synopsis
He wasn't supposed to find her. He definitely wasn't supposed to save her.
Kael Ashford is nobody special — a blacksmith's son in a forgotten border village, still grieving his father, still mending pot handles for neighbors who barely notice him. Then one frost-bitten night in the Greywood, a sound like the sky tearing open sends him running toward danger instead of away from it, and he finds her: a dragon, dying, three arrows in her side, the first of her kind seen alive in a hundred years.
Everyone told him dragons were monsters. Everyone was wrong — or everyone had a reason to want him to believe it.
Pulling those arrows out is the easy part. What comes after — a fugitive princess with a stolen crown's worth of fury, a broken old knight carrying sixty years of guilt, and a huntmaster who's killed six dragons and will not stop at seven — asks considerably more of an ordinary boy than one impulsive act of mercy should ever cost.
Because somewhere beyond the mountains, in a valley no map remembers, seven dragon eggs are waiting to hatch into a future a tyrant lord intends to burn before it ever draws breath. And Kael just became the reason it might survive instead.
He didn't set out to start a rebellion. He just couldn't leave something broken lying in the dark.
