Synopsis

The feast must be of the fire, yet not consumed by it. The halls run at 480 degrees. Nobody has managed it in ninety-three years.


Embric's monograph called the food at Aldric Fumblewick's wedding "of a dampness not previously recorded." Now there are seven-foot dragons queuing politely around the block at Damp Pizza, each insisting someone else go first. Then the volcano sends a letter. The dragon clans want Vera Lott to cater their summit with the humans. They asked for her by name.


Vera says no. The Guild awards the job to Pellingham's anyway: forty-three identical restaurants, a laminated manual, and a contract that scores food by weight per crown. Under "remarks," the tender clerk enters Vera's pizza as a Liability.


Then Aldric's sister-in-law Cindra turns up and hits her head on the doorframe. She is hosting the summit, and she has been engaged for ninety-three years. Her own rulebook won't let her marry until somebody serves a feast that comes out of the fire without burning.


So Aldric is off to a volcano, and the caravan is almost too big to move. He brings a dwarf-built oven, a five-year-old Head of Waitstaff, a dragon who keeps eating the samples, two archivists falling in love through an index, and a cook who has been holding herself back for a very long time.


He also brings forty towels.


The pizza survives four seconds outside the oven. Aldric needs ninety.


Book 8 of The Fumblewick Chronicles is a complete adventure of its own. It's a warm, witty comic fantasy about bureaucracy, family, a small business, and finally being allowed to be too much.
