Synopsis

This book depicts an existential crisis, an ascent, and a ‘self-discovery’. It takes the form of a ‘realisatory dialogue’ in which there is no rivalry, no desire, and no release of tension, but a meeting of two hearts.

Antonio has had every possible kind of experience, but has not found completeness or the solution to his existential problems, and this has brought him to the brink of suicide. Wandering in the ‘forest of becoming’, he meets Raphael and embarks with him on a ‘realisatory apprenticeship’ which step by step resolves into the transfiguration of his restless and unsatisfied consciousness.

The goal is high and difficult for someone, who, like Antonio, is a slave to preconceptions and mental limitations. By the light of Advaitavada (the Pathway of Non-Duality) and Asparsavada (the Pathway without supports) Raphael will guide him to undertake a work of discrimination between ‘that which truly is and that which merely appears to be’, so that Antonio will come to recognise within himself the existence of an absolute reality.

Raphael employs the devices which he considers most suitable to the different phases: realisatory dialogue, enquiry directed to the depths of one’s own being, an explanation, which is almost scientific, of certain mental processes which gives Antonio the possibility of rooting out the cause of all conflict (see in particular ‘How subconsciousness is born’), until the original incompleteness is reduced to ashes, from which Antonio arises with the awareness of being That.

In the course of the dialogue, which in many passages is reminiscent of the dialogue which unfolds in Sankara’s Vivekacudamani, there are images and sentences which are strikingly profound and which Raphael presents with such wisdom that Antonio will be led to declare, ‘You have the power to grant me peace of heart and to bestow the most beautiful things upon me.’

This book may interest a wide circle of readers, because there are many in a situation similar to that of Antonio and many who have within them seeds ready to awaken and are seeking a means to make them germinate and flower.

Raphael is a Master in the Metaphysical Tradition of East and West. He has written several books on the pathway of Non-duality (Advaita) and has translated a number of key Vedanta texts from the Sanskrit. He has also commented on the Orphic Tradition and compared it to the works of Plato, Parmenides, and Plotinus.
