Synopsis

The game that Captain Leale Martelli plays against his rival demon, Romitone, has been taking place for a long time on a Senet chessboard. It is a mysterious game of which the true nature is not yet revealed. The pawns now move through the territories that stretch between Valle Benedetta and the nearby city of Livorno. New Knights Templar enter the game at the side of the Captain who cunningly challenges the obscure adversary, lord and manipulator of the dimensions of space and time. The objective is to succeed in placating the power of the demon, with ingenuity, in order to return it to its ancient home in the sands of Sais in a gigantic and hidden inverted pyramid that lies buried in the subsoil of the desert. The captain of the SS, Roberto Martello, who resembles an ancient Knight Templar, gradually manages to free himself from the magnetic dimensional coils of the powerful demon thanks to a corporal who resembles both of them. So three characters from different eras who happen to share the same surname. In this second book of the saga of Captain Loyal Martelli, the reader is challenged by John Oldman through a continuous alternation of detailed and punctilious historical chronicles, considerations of real events in progress and metaphysical reflections, rhythmically drawing attention to what may lie between the lines of the novel.
