Synopsis
1908 : Jean, fils de paysans du Forez, est une graine de poète. Le destin ne l'épargne pas et le conduit, orphelin, dans la région de Thiers. Là, il partage son temps entre la mise au tranchant des couteaux auprès d'Auguste l'émouleur, et la mise en chanson de ses humeurs. Gueulards, râleurs, durs à l'effort, les émouleurs forgent sa conscience d'homme libre face aux pressions des patrons. Ciseleur de vers, Jean apprend à crypter sa poésie dans l'élan d'un amour interdit. Mais soudain survient la Grande Guerre. Après les carnages des offensives ratées, Jean et d'autres soldats remettent en cause les décisions du commandement. S'élève alors dans les tranchées une chanson de colère et de révolte...
