Synopsis
These six little piano pieces are among Liszt’s best-known works and are comparatively easy to play – a rarity amongst the composer’s often eccentric and virtuosic works. In 1844 Liszt had already begun work on the cycle that was only published in 1850. Although he had the pieces engraved, this version was never actually printed. He replaced no. 3, a precursor to the first Hungarian Rhapsody, with a piece in the style of a nocturne by Chopin (it can occasionally be heard as an encore at piano recitals), and he simplified the remaining numbers. In the second part of our edition we have reproduced the complete early version for the first time.

Liszt s'était déjà attelé à ce cycle en 1844 et le fit paraître en 1850. Il fit graver les pièces, mais cette version ne fut jamais publiée. La troisième pièce, ébauche de la première Rhapsodie hongroise, fut remplacée par un morceau composé dans le style des Nocturnes de Chopin (on a parfois l'occasion de l'entendre en bis lors de récitals de piano). Quant aux autres pièces, il les simplifia. An dem Zyklus, 1850 erschienen, hatte Liszt bereits 1844 gearbeitet. Er ließ die Stücke zwar stechen, es kam aber nicht zum Druck dieser Fassung. Die Nr. 3, eine Vorstufe der 1. Ungarischen Rhapsodie, ersetzte er durch ein Stück im Stil eines Chopin-Nocturnes (man hört es gelegentlich als Zugabe im Klavierabend), die übrigen Nummern vereinfachte er.
