Synopsis
First performed in September 1802, Haydn's 'Harmoniemesse' was the last of the high masses composed to commission from Haydn's employer Prince Nicolaus II of Esterhazy. While Haydn called the work simply 'Missa' the work has acquired its nickname due to the prominent role given to woodwind ('harmonie') instruments in the piece. Haydns "Harmoniemesse" wurde im September 1802 uraufgeführt und war die letzte der hohen Messen, die er im Auftrag von Haydns Dienstherrn Fürst Nikolaus II. von Esterhazy komponierte. Während Haydn das Werk einfach "Missa" nannte, hat es seinen Spitznamen aufgrund der herausragenden Rolle erhalten, die den Holzblasinstrumenten ("Harmonie") in dem Werk zukommt.
