Der Komponist und Sänger Nicola Vaccai machte es sich zur Aufgabe, die Übungen, die jeder Schüler anfangs zur Stimmbildung machen sollte, ansprechender zu gestalten. Deshalb schrieb er kurze Stücke, jedes mit einem eigenen Zweck und mit Text unterlegt. Für den deutschen Leser fügte John Bernhoff Übersetzungen davon hinzu, Vaccai selbst empfiehlt dagegen, Verse von Metastasio auf seine Melodien zu singen.
