Synopsis

The present volume collects those of Schuberts string quartets which date from the late summer of 1813 to the year 1816. It opens with the works of a sixteen-year-old boy about to leave the Stadtkonvikt or Imperial College and to re-establish closer contacts with the home of his father by learning and exercising the teaching profession, and ends with the work of a young man of nineteen years who is about to launch into his first year of independence (leave of absence from school service and residence with his friend Schober) and to submit his first serious application for a post outside Vienna.
