The unique and diverse old town of Vilnius is one of the largest
in Central and Eastern Europe; even the newer parts of the city have
inherited its irregular, organic planning principle. However, while roaming
around the old and new city, one should not rely solely on books. One
should walk without haste and let oneself get carried away by accident and
whim, be attentive to details and fragments, and always look for new, yet
unnoticed vantage points. Southern architecture beneath the northern sky,
the Vilnius amphitheatre nestled among steep hills, invaded by groves and
barren areas, summer cumuli and autumn haze - all this forms a surprisingly
uniform, though unplanned, ensemble. It radiates the spirit of freedom and
individuality typical of Europe. Tomas Venclova
