A Course in Conversational Malay was developed over a 15 year period of classroom use. It is a course which is suitable for language study in the classroom, or for individual study at home.
The course is based on the conversational language of Malaysia and is useful to people studying or travelling in Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei. Equivalent Indonesian vocabulary is also given where this differs from the Malay.
There are 25 lessons. Topics include greetings, making requests, identifying objects and colours, talking about the family, transportation, ordering food and drinks, looking for people and places, asking the time, requesting and giving directions, receiving and offering invitations, discussing cultural differences, talking about sickness and health, driving, marketing and bargaining.
Each lesson has a set of short presentation dialogues, a section on sentence structure, notes on language use and grammar, and detailed exercises. There are over 5,000 individual exercises. Each exercise is presented in a conversational context and drills the structures and vocabulary in the current dialogue, as well as reviewing the structures and vocabulary in previous dialogues.
New to this edition are 11 sets of review exercises of 40 utterances each accompanied by suggested answers, and an appendix of interactive exercises to further encourage communicative use of the language.
There is a detailed introduction describing the format and use of the lessons, a section describing the sound system of Malay, and three glossaries comprising various word lists from Malay to English and English to Malay.
This is a companion volume to A Course in Conversational Indonesian. The dialogues and exercises follow a parallel format enabling parallel acquisition of the two language varieties.
The presentation dialogues are recorded on one audio cassette which accompanies the book. An 8 page supplement giving cross references to "A Student's Grammar of Malay and Indonesian" is available on the web.
LEVEL: BEGINNER
Recommended for learners with no background in Malay. When completed, the text will bring students to quite a sophisticated level of conversational speech.
