Synopsis

Few figures of the eighteenth century have been as feared, mythologised or misread as Adam Weishaupt (1748–1830), founder of the Bavarian Illuminati. This edition returns to his own words.

Composed as the movement came under attack, in the wake of the police raids that revealed its membership, the second edition (1788) of The Improved System of the Illuminati with All Its Degrees and Structures stands as Weishaupt’s considered defence of the Order and its purpose. Far from the conspiracy of later legend, it presents the Illuminati as a graded system for the cultivation of virtue.

Dedicated “to the world and the human race”, the work sets out an eight-stage path of moral and intellectual formation, one indebted more to the discipline of the Jesuits than to Freemasonry. In doing so, it affords a rare, first-hand account of the Order’s structure and degrees, and of the ideas that placed it among the most contentious experiments of the Enlightenment.
