Synopsis

Community opposition is now the most common cause of delay and cancellation for industrial projects worldwide. The reason is not bad luck or bad people. It is the absence of a discipline. Protecting community well-being and protecting project viability are not competing goals. They are the same goal, and it can be engineered.

Social Accord Architecture is the founding text of that discipline. It treats the capacity for durable agreement between an industrial project and the community it lives beside as buildable, measurable infrastructure: something that can be designed, constructed, maintained, and handed over, exactly like the road, the pit, or the plant.

For a generation the industry has answered conflict with the same tools: a community relations function that is structurally compromised, a mediation profession built for different wars, and a compliance regime that mandates mechanisms without producing competence. This book replaces improvisation with a method. Every instrument in it was built in the field, under load, across fifteen years and more than two thousand resolved claims.

By the final page you own the complete system:

  • The five principles that govern every accord, and the boundaries of what the discipline is and is not.
  • The four-phase framework: Diagnostic Mapping, Blueprinting, Assembly, and Stewardship and Scaling, each taught to execution level with its own numbered instruments.
  • The Relational Stress-Test: the one test that stands between a design and a signature, so weak agreements fail on paper instead of on site.
  • Two mediation pathways: GROUNDS for standard disputes and REBUILD for trauma, with the logic for knowing which the situation demands.
  • The Impact Load-Bearing scale: a rating that tells you what weight a relationship can actually carry, and when it is safe to proceed.
  • The actors of the accord: community, company, the state, the financiers, and the practitioner, each taken seat by seat, with the governance conditions that make the work hold.

It closes with one composite accord walked from first contact to handover, an adoption roadmap for organizations and the field, and a back matter built as a working reference: a standards crosswalk to IFC, the UN Guiding Principles, ICMM, the OECD Guidance, and CSDDD, a glossary, quick-reference cards, template skeletons, and a failure modes index.

Who this book is for: social performance and community relations leaders, mediators and dispute resolution professionals, ESG and sustainability heads, mining and energy executives and directors, investors and lenders, and the advocates who hold all of them to account.

This is the cornerstone volume of the Social Accord Architecture reference library, the discipline Thomas Gaultier developed to treat company-community engagement as engineered infrastructure. The rest of the library is built around it: the community playbook When the Mine Arrives, the methodology volume Rebuild Grounds, the governance case Social Risk for Boards, and the practitioner companions Mediating Extractive Conflicts and The Human Shock Absorber.

About the author: Thomas Gaultier is a mediator and lawyer who has mediated thousands of community claims across Sub-Saharan Africa and Europe, served as a community relations manager inside a European mining operation, and trained some of the world's largest mining groups in conflict prevention and resolution. He is admitted to the New York Bar, teaches negotiation and mediation at the Universidade Catolica Portuguesa, and is the author of Mediating Extractive Conflicts, The Human Shock Absorber, Standing in the Middle, When the Mine Arrives, Social Risk for Boards, and Rebuild Grounds.

We do not stumble into agreements. We design them.
