D. H. Kerby attended Swarthmore College, where he paid the most attention to physics and to philosophy, viewing the latter as an opportunity to improve his opinions about what sort of government is best.
Becoming involved in the movement against U.S. intervention in Central America during the 1980's, he continued studying philosophy at the University of London and at the Univeristy of California at Berkeley.
In 1990, he was an assistant to political prisoners and their families in Cape Town, South Africa, meeting many women and men as they emerged from the crucible of apartheid's notorious prisons, to which they had been consigned for resisting white minority rule.
This resistance would form the basis, along with true contrition on the part of some of their former oppressors, for the 'South African miracle,' the relatively bloodless dismantling of the aparteheid state.'
His mother and father were political writers also; she did groundbreaking research! about the Hollywood blacklist - that facet of the McCarthy era anti-communist persecutions which affected the film industry, and his late father won the 1976 Pulitzer Prize for editoial writing for Los Angeles Times.
