Land dominates the life of almost every person in Bangladesh, particularly in rural areas. A proper recording of land rights, along with the need for a sound land management system is important for a largely agrarian economy under heavy population pressure. This volume contains much information on various aspects of land administration and land reforms in Bangladesh. The author has presented, in several chapters, the historical background of the land tenure system, details on land surveys, land records, alluvion and diluvion laws at different times. He has also presented case studies on land use planning and agricultural development through land reforms and other innovations, along with the pattern of an emerging land management system, which would be both growth-oriented and egalitarian. This work should help others to initiate analytical and investigative studies in this major area, from which policy planners and development practitioners should benefit.
