Synopsis
A central concern of the 38 essays is the significance and fullness of the self when it is partly also the Other. They were presented at the November 1989 symposium Literature in Asia and the Pacific Region by writers, critics, and scholars from the region and the US and Britain. The topics include Mudreero Narogin's Dalwurra, the invention of identity in Singapore poetry in English and Chinese, reading the feminism in Arthurian romances, and the somnambulist careening around the crater. About the Author
Edwin Thumboo is one of Singapore's most distinguished poets. An Emeritus Professor, he is currently Director of the NUS Centre for the Arts, National University of Singapore, where he was appointed Professor of English in January 1979. He was also Head of the Department of English Language and Literature (1977-93), the first Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (1980-91) and Professorial Fellow (1995-2002). Professor Thumboo has published four collections of poems and two collections of nursery rhymes. He has also has edited various Singapore, regional and international literary anthologies Thiru Kandiah is currently retired as Professor of English (University of Peradeniya). He has published locally (Sri Lanka) and internationally in English Studies (Language and Literature), under the perspective that the historically-constituted conditions in ex-colonial countries enable a reversal of the familiar one-way (centre to periphery) directionality of the flow of ideas, to the enhancement of epistemological insight and of the chances of attaining a truly participatory global scholarly community whose work would matter to the masses of human subjects who are at the heart of its endeavours.
