Synopsis

Approaching the topic from a Weberian perspective, Leong (Institute of Southeast Asian Studies, Singapore) examines the developments of policy initiatives and policy-making dynamics in Singapore's paternal state, arguing that too many important sectors of Singapore are left out of the development and modernization efforts. He focuses on the institutional mechanisms of the state, contending that the contestation of political interests are largely responsible for the shape of policy. Revised edition of The Politics of Policy-Making in Singapore (2000). Distributed in the US by ISBS. Annotation (c) Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)

Synopsis

The book offers a critical analysis of the political dynamics that shape Singapore's public policies. It suggests that policy-making in Singapore involves a complex process of interaction among political institutions and that the distribution of power among these institutions is hierarchical and precarious. Thus, the book argues, the contestation of political interests occupies a central position in these stratified interactions, and this has been largely responsible for the types of policies and their impact.
