Book 29 of 29: Green Chemistry and Sustainable Technology

Nazari, Laleh; Xu, Chunbao (Charles); Ray, Madhumita B.

9789811592669: Advanced and Emerging Technologies for Resource Recovery from Wastes (Green Chemistry and Sustainable Technology)

Synopsis

This book introduces advanced or emerging technologies for conversion of wastes into a variety of high-value chemicals and materials. Energy and resources can be recovered from various residential, industrial and commercial wastes, such as municipal wastewater and sludge, e-waste, waste plastics and resins, crop residues, forestry residues and lignin. Advanced waste-to-resource and energy technologies like pyrolysis, hydrothermal liquefaction, fractionation, de-polymerization, gasification and carbonization are also introduced. The book serves as an essential guide to dealing with various types of wastes and the methods of disposal, recovery, recycling and re-use.  As such it is a valuable resource for a wide readership, including graduate students, academic researchers, industrial researchers and practitioners in chemical engineering, waste management, waste to energy and resources conversion and biorefinery.

About the Author

Dr. Laleh Nazari is Postdoctoral Associate at The University of Western Ontario, working as a researcher at the Institute for Chemicals and Fuels from Alternative Resources (ICFAR), London, ON, Canada. She received her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Chemical Engineering from the Iran University of Science and Technology (2005) and the University of Tehran, Iran (2007), respectively, and she completed her Ph.D. in Chemical and Biochemical Engineering (2016) at the University of Western Ontario, ICFAR. During her Ph.D. studies, she developed a hydrothermal liquefaction technology for co-processing of high-water-content wastewater sludge and other lignocellulosic biomass or municipal solid waste (MSW) for co-production of bio-oil and biogas. She has published and co-authored three book chapters and 8 scholarly papers in peer-reviewed journals. A PCT patent was filed on the basis of her Ph.D. research.

Dr. Chunbao (Charles) Xu is Professor of Chemical Engineering at the Institute for Chemicals and Fuels from Alternative Resources (ICFAR) and the Department of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering, Western University, and was the NSERC/FPInnovations Industrial Research Chair in Forest Biorefinery between 2011 and 2016. He has built an international reputation in the fields of biorefinery and green process/environmental engineering, particularly in the production of bioenergy, bio-fuels, bio-based chemicals and materials from wastes and by-products/residues from the forestry and agricultural sectors. One of his major research contributions is the development of highly efficient and cost-effective hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) processes for energy/resource recovery from various solid wastes/residues. He has co-edited two Springer books on biorefinery and published 14 book chapters and 160+ peer-reviewed papers in scholarly journals. His work has received total citations of 5,600+ with an H-index of 41 to date (measured by Google Scholar).

Dr. Madhumita B Ray is Professor of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Department and Director of Western Water Centre at Western University. Her research areas include development of advanced air, water and wastewater treatment technologies on adsorption, anaerobic digestion, membrane and advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) and environmental modelling. She has 7 book chapters, and 200 papers published in journals and conference proceedings with an h-index of 32 and i-10 index of 68 with over 3400 citations.  She has been an executive member of environmental division of the Chemical Institute of Canada (CIC) 2014–2017, Organizing Chair for environmental symposia for both CIC and Canadian Society for Chemical Engineers (CSChE) since 2011, and Guest Editor for special issues for Environments, International Journal of Environmental Technology and Management, Environmental Engineering Science. She has been Visiting Professor in China, Russia, India and the Netherlands.  Her recent awards include Western Engineering Research Excellence award and Hilal Distinguished Speaker award of IIChemE among others.
