كان قيام الدول ونشأة القوميات ناقوس خطر للجماعات اليهودية في أوروبا، حيث شيدت الدول الحديثة على أساس عرقي، ولم يستوعب اليهود الذين عاشوا منعزلين في الجيتو اليهودي ذلك. كما ساد الغرب الأوروبي حالة من الكره الشديد لليهود، مما جعل مفكّرًا كبيرًا مثل ماكس فيبر يعتبرهم أصل الشرور في العالم، أما هيجل فقد أكد أن الروح القومية اليهودية لم تدرك المثل العليا للحرية والعقل، وأن شعائرها بدائية ولا عقلانية. وقد سار غوستاف لوبون على نهج مفكري أوروبا في موقفهم من اليهود أثناء تلك الحقبة، وصاغ كتابه "اليهود في تاريخ الحضارات الأولى" من هذا المنطلق فكال لهم الاتهامات، ووصفهم بأبشع الصفات، نافيا أي دور لهم في نشأة الحضارات القديمة. وهكذا يُمثل هذا الكتاب نمطًا فكريا ساد أوروبا منذ العصور الوسطى وحتى منتصف القرن العشرين
