Synopsis

James Gleeson is regarded as one of the foremost Australian Surrealist painters. His career spans from 1938 to the present day, and encompasses works created in response to wartime, the haunting "Garden" paintings, his heroic "psychoscapes" and experimental collages, and the most recent "cosmic" paintings which explore the undercurrents within the subconscious mind. Gleeson has always sought to explore the limits of the senses - individual ways of apprehending the world - and his art endeavours to catch glimpses of the reality beyond these limits. As the artist himself has observed, his method has been to paint as carefully as possible what he can't actually see. Influenced initially by such artists as Dali, Picasso and El Greco, Gleeson later became influenced by the works of Michelangelo and the concept of perfecting humanity through virtue. However, Gleeson has now returned to his earlier position - that humanity is driven by unconscious forces. This illustrated work explores the haunted depths of the psyche and, in Gleeson's case, reveals the images which emerge from the shadows of the soul.
