Excerpt from the Preface: The word "political" in the subtitle of this book has nothing to do with "politics" as commonly understood, meaning partisan politics. The word is used in its older meaning, referring to matters that concern the body politic, things affecting human culture and society. It might be clearer if we were to entitle this book "Reflections on Public and Cultural Affairs": but how pretentious that would sound when applied to this little collection of modest essays! So let us settle for a more modest if ambiguous term, "Political Reflections." Most of these essays have appeared in my weekly columns: "At Random" in The Star, "Reflections" in The Sunday Express, "Of Book and Authors" in The Journal. "The Inverted Pyramid" appeared in Solidarity, and "The Road to Kabasalan" in Midweek Magazine. Most of the essays have been revised, in some cases drastically. To the editors and publishers of the abovenamed periodicals, my sincere thanks. These essays are not intended to be provocative. But if anyone should feel provoked, so much the better. -Miguel A. Bernad, S.J.
