"Most people think that killing innocent people is wrong. However, it is surprisingly difficult to explain why this is the case. What makes it wrong to kill another innocent human being? In The Ethics of Killing - Why is it Wrong to Kill an Innocent Human Being Rabia Hassan investigates the recent work in analytic philosophy on this topic in an accessible way. She argues against the popular views according to which killing is wrong because it either harms the victim or disrespects his/her dignity as a person. According to Hassan, these views fail to explain why it is equally wrong to kill any innocent human being. Her own view is that killing is wrong because life is sacred. Hassan offers a strong defence of this theistic position". -Dr. Jussi Suikkanen Lecturer in Philosophy Department of Philosophy University of Birmingham, United Kingdom "In this book, Rabia Hassan grapples with complex philosophical issues related to the ethics of killing, and the moral status of humans and nonhumans, that are of both enduring scholarly significance and practical import. Though her religiously-inspired answers will not satisfy everyone, a range of readers are likely to benefit from the opportunity to learn and think about these exciting philosophical questions and arguments". Born in Lahore in 1965, to an established and well-known lineage, Rabia Hassan and her family members are well-recognised names for their philanthropic services in Pakistan. The people of Pakistan largely recognise the family’s contributions to education, health, environment, art and entertainment for the development of society. Following attendance at the elite Convent of Sacred Heart School, and completing her Bachelors degree from the prestigious Kinnaird College for Women, upon getting married in 1986 Rabia moved to England as Rabia Husain. With a deep interest and passion to promote health, this has been clearly portrayed across her academic and professional life. In 2004, alongside raising a family she completed a Masters degree in ‘Health Promotion & Development’ from Birmingham City University. During this, she undertook a research project on the uptake of Breast screening invitations amongst Muslim women, with a view to increase the understanding of their barriers to the United Kingdom’s National Health Service Breast Screening Programme. This reflected her personal vision of ‘Saving Mothers’, following the loss of her own mother due to breast cancer, the beautiful and charismatic, Begum Nadira Hassan. She went on to present this research paper at the annual National Health Development Conference in 2005. Following on from this she has continuously participated and provided her services to numerous events and charity work in the fight against cancer. Being a strong believer in continuous learning, after a break of nine years Rabia completed a second Masters degree in ‘Philosophy of Health & Happiness’ from the University of Birmingham, in September 2013. This provided her with the unique and inspiring ability to view health from a philosophical perspective, as opposed to a scientific one.
