Luego de una entrevista con el rey Luis XIII, quien por su rivalidad con el cardenal queda encantado con D'Artagnan, éste último es aceptado como cadete de un regimiento de la Guardia Real, presidida por el señor des Essarts, esperando la posibilidad de llegar a ser mosquetero.
