Synopsis

The finest and most characteristic products of the arts and crafts in Hungary at the time of the Turkish occupation of the country are presented in this book. Thev are preserved in the rich collec­tion of the Hungarian National Museum and have so far been mostly unknown to the general public. Hungary, which was the north­ernmost territory conquered and ruled over by the Ottoman Empire for 150 years in the six­teenth and seventeenth centuries, can pride herself on having unique pieces which are outstand­ing even on a world standard. These include, for example, the colourful canvas tent ranking high among ancient Islamic textile works, and the leather caftan, with its sumptuous applique work, that is a peerless creation of the Sultan's workshop in Istanbul. By revealing ancient Slavonic inscriptions side by side with arabesques and other orna­ments the delicately engraved sil­ver bowls show a blend of Islamic art widespread also on the Balkan peninsula.
