This is Fidel Castro's brilliant courtroom defence speech which he delivered at his trial for initiating an armed uprising against the Batista dictatorship on July 26th 1953. Only 26 years old at the time, having recently graduated in law, Fidel used the trial to outline what he considered a necessary programme of political, social and economic reform in Cuba. This became the programme of the Cuban revolution. He was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment, only to be released 20 months later after a broad amnesty campaign.
