Synopsis
"The present book investigates the book of Revelation’s unique approach to referencing Old Testament scriptures, emphasizing its reliance on allusions and utilization of exegetical techniques that were used in Antiquity. The contributors discuss the challenges and possibilities of identifying scriptural references in Revelation. Revelation is deeply influenced by the Old Testament, both linguistically and thematically, and often uses established traditions and targum-like interpretations. The ten contributions include studies on the education of the author of Revelation; reception of specific Old Testament books such as the Minor Prophets, Isaiah, Ezekiel, and Daniel; and the influence of early Jewish writings like First Enoch on the book of Revelation. Comparative aspects—for example, the reception of Isaiah in Revelation and in the Ascension of Isaiah—are also highlighted, showing shared theological themes and hermeneutic approaches. Additionally, the book explores the interpretation of the “seven spirits of God” in Revelation and the possible use of Revelation in Cyril of Jerusalem’s fourth-century catechesis. The authors aim to provide a more nuanced understanding of aspects of Revelation’s hermeneutics and its relationship with Old Testament scriptures, early Jewish writings, and later Christian reception history."

"Anti Laato is Professor in Old Testament and Judaic Studies at Åbo Akademi University. Lotta Valve is University Lecturer of Biblical Studies at the University of Eastern Finland, Joensuu campus. Together, Antii Laato and Lotta Valve are the coeditors of Adam and Eve Story, vol 1, In the Hebrew Bible and in Ancient Jewish Writings Including the New Testament; Adam and Eve Story, vol 2, In Jewish, Christian, and Islamic Perspectives; and Life of Adam and Eve: Using Jewish Traditions and Confronting Gnostic Reversed Exegesis."
