Matter and Mind in Architecture was the theme of the 7th Alvar Aalto Symposium, thus the title of the book documenting the symposium. It's a theme that might have been construed as somewhat introspective, perhaps out of touch with the present state of commerce, but its purpose was to instigate a discussion of materials and meanings, matter and content, and to encourage architects to participate in the fundamental problems facing the world. Because architects ought no longer be bystanders in a world of intensifying environmental problems, Matter and Mind in Architecture encourages self-scrutiny.
The contributing writers, all important representatives in their respective fields of philosophy, music, literature and architecture include Kazuyo Sejima, Vittorio Gregotti, Wilfried Wang, Juan Navarro Baldeweg and John Patkau.
