Jan is interested in how the two alternative forms of expression (visual art and writing) may complement - or clash with - each other. The need to reflect on the relationship between an artist's use of text and the work per se becomes stronger by the day, with the rising demand on textual output in the education system and especially, the artist's PhD. While professor for artistic research at the Post Graduate Department of the Finish Academy of Fine Arts in Helsinki, Svenungsson published "An Artist's Text Book" which, in an easy to read form, addresses practical as well as theoretical concerns regarding the role of text in the life of the visual artist today.
