Synopsis

George Ayling was an Englishman who never umpired a first-class match in his home country but was called upon to stand as umpire in a Test match while on military duty in India in 1956. This being a Test between India and Australia Ayling became one of the first ‘neutral’ umpires to officiate in a Test match, long before the practice became universal in the 1990s.
Until now, the life and career of George Ayling have passed unrecorded in the literature of cricket. Michael Jones has now put together the detailed account of Ayling's life with assiduous research, and the assistance of military and educational bodies in both England and India.
An unusual book, a small volume but a sparkling one.
