De vroegere hoofdstad van het Romeinse Rijk oefende een sterke aantrekkingskracht uit door monumenten zoals het Colosseum, de nabijgelegen sites (Pompei, Herculaneum) en kunst met het droombeeld van de ideale schoonheid naar het Griekse voorbeeld.
De tentoonstelling brengt de bijzonderheden van een stad vol contrasten en genoegens, badend in een zuiders licht. De verschillende wijken, de paleizen, de kunstateliers, het drukke leven van de inwoners en zelfs de gastronomie hebben de kunst in Europa nieuwe kleuren ingeblazen.
