About the Author

The 23-year-old documentary photographer Ilse Wolf studied photography at the Royal Academy of Arts in Antwerp. Then she continued her studies at AKV St. Joost in Breda, the Netherlands, where she got her bachelor degree in photography. 'Weather Permitting' is her graduation project. Like her other projects it started as a personal quest. What is loneliness? Does that even exist? She wondered what it would be like to escape from the fast consumer's society. To be really alone. To just see what the day will bring you. To be dependent on nature. Previously Ilse Wolf has made a photo report on Intensive Care and a documentary on the Payatas garbage belt in Manilla. She has been working as a freelance photographer from her studio in Breda for a number of years. Weather Permitting is her first photobook.

De 23e jarige documentaire fotografe Ilse Wolf studeerde met 'Weather Permitting' af aan de kunstacademie AKV st Joost in Breda. Ze vroeg zich af hoe het zou zijn om weg te zijn uit de prestatiemaatschappij. Om niet 24/7 bereikbaar te zijn en niet alles te delen via social media. Zonder telefoon en internet reisde ze af naar Caldey Island, een klein eiland voor de kust van Wales. Een reis waarin ze de controlefreak en telefoonverslaafde achter zich liet en de eenzaamheid opzocht. Gewapend met pen en camera ontstond aldus een uniek boek dat enkel al door de serene vormgeving de sfeer op het eiland weergeeft.

Caldey is een minuscuul eiland voor de kust van Wales waar de tijd stil staat. Wat ooit een bruisend eiland was met kinderen, een school en een buurthuis, is tegenwoordig de basis voor een afgezonderd bestaan. Geen supermarkt. Geen straatverlichting. Alleen een vaste kern van eenentwintig bewoners, waaronder twaalf monniken, die één zijn met de ruige natuur. De eilanders zijn afhankelijk van het tij, het licht, en elkaar. Hoe is het om zo afgezonderd te wonen? Wat brengt het eiland hen? Wat drijft hen? Door portretten, interieurs, landschaps- en eilandtaferelen op unieke wijze vast te leggen, creëerde Ilse Wolf een genuanceerd, complex beeld van een uitzonderlijk gesloten gemeenschap.
