Gautam Ganguli is a metallurgical engineer and a gold medallist in the Senior Cambridge School Leaving Examinations in 1959. He graduated from IIT Kharagpur in 1963.
A hands-on professional, he retired from the corporate sector in 2014 as the President of the BRG Group of Industries.
Despite the professional demands on his time, he has always had a continued interest in the interface between academics and industry, training of young engineers in modern technology and the encouragement of high school students to opt for engineering as a career.
In this publication, he has painstakingly edited and compiled the tutorial notes and solved examples left behind by the late Dr Ram Gopal Chatterji, who taught Physics at IIT Kharagpur until his retirement in 1982 and coached high school students for the IIT Joint Entrance Examinations thereafter almost till his death in 2000.
